His death, I believe, would've created more problems within the regime itself. That does not mean that they might not have let him die anyway but I think it increased his odds of success. With regards to the Cardinal I think Carlos Alberto Montaner is right on the money that it offers the regime someone to engage with that represents an already existing institution the Church and avoids legitimizing dissenters among other calculations it has made.

I'm not a fan of hunger strikes myself, but it is the ultimate recourse in the arsenal of non-violent resistance, and as you can see with both Orlando Zapata Tamayo and Guillermo Fariñas it carries a high price.John Suarezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11333798474560217548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1419558703918975245.post-2855537933196669742010-08-29T03:21:29.052-04:002010-08-29T03:21:29.052-04:00John,

Are you surprised too?) by complete surprise. Looking at Nagler’s rules, JJ certainly doesn’t meet #2, unless somehow the target audience is the international community so that in turn it pressures the Havana regime into letting JJ leave the island. There’s no question the Cuban Catholic Church (Cardinal Jaime Ortega) played an important role in having JJ’s demands be met. In any case, I feel much elated that JJ will now be able to finally receive the much needed treatment for his illness. While I am against hunger strikes, JJ may not have been able to be in South Florida today had he not done one.Mickeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11102225255663950761noreply@blogger.com
