Reporter Patricia Mazzei’s May 2 article, Will Donald Trump drive Miami Cuban Americans from GOP? New poll says Yes, omits a big reason why Trump is losing them: He supports President Obama’s Cuba policy, which is rejected by Cuban American voters.
This is reflected by the high levels of Cuban-American support for elected officials in Congress and the Senate who back maintaining sanctions on the Castro regime and a human rights centered policy.
If other Republicans follow Trump in abandoning a principled Cuba policy of maintaining sanctions, supporting human rights and recognizing that nothing has changed in Cuba because it remains a communist dictatorship run by the Castro family, then they will, like Trump, lose the Cuban-American vote.
