Why are US taxpayer dollars going to UNESCO to advance the ideology of Ernesto "Che" Guevara that inspire Hamas terrorists?

Why are US taxpayer dollars going to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to advance the murderous and genocidal ideology of Ernesto "Che" Guevara? His poisonous ideas are being spread in Gaza, and celebrated by communist antisemites. Will the U.S. State Department, Secretary Antony Blinken, or the Senate Foreign Relations Committee address this?

US taxpayers are elevating the “Life and Works of Ernesto Che Guevara: from the originals manuscripts of its adolescence and youth to the campaign Diary in Bolivia” through UNESCO in 2013.


Castro regime spokesman claim Che Guevara as an inspiration for the "resistance" in the aftermath of the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel last week.

 

Paragliders were used to murder concert goers in Israel last week.

What are Ernesto "Che" Guevara's secular ideas inspiring Hamas, and promoted by UNESCO with US taxpayer funds? 

Here are a few of them.

This is what has been normalized, and is being promoted by UNESCO, and young children are, and have been, reading in Gaza for years. 

Then one asks oneself where did they get the idea to engage in the brutality the world witnessed last week? Ideas have consequences, and not challenging, or worse yet, promoting bad ones can be deadly. 

The same crowd that normalized Che Guevara on t-shirts is trying to do the same with images of the para-gliders used to slaughter hundreds of music concert goers last week.


 These communists and Hamas supporters would like us to either normalize, ignore, or deny the mass murder and terrorism committed by Hamas last week, but we have a duty to remember, and denounce this crime. Here are the latest figures from the State of Israel on the over 1,300 murdered and 3,360 injured in the terror attacks in which over 6,300 rockets were launched at the Jewish State..

UN Human Rights Council covers up famine in Venezuela & places Che Guevara's image on display

On  the eve of the start of observing the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights this blog highlighted some of the shortcomings of the United Nations and called on UN officials to engage in a serious and "profound reflection" on their actions to ensure that they do not continue undermining their own mission.  Sadly, this advise was not heeded.

Ideas have consequences and those ideas are sometimes represented by iconic images. This is the case with the image of Ernesto "Che" Guevara and the philosophy of political action that he advocated and that others seek to emulate.  

It is disappointing and an outrage that the United Nations Human Rights Council would display the image of Che Guevara. The legacy of Che Guevara is a rejection of international human rights standards.

Consider that Guevara's claim to fame was the role he played along with Fidel and Raul Castro in installing a totalitarian communist regime in Cuba and attempting to spread this model using violent means in Africa and Latin America. Guevara was executed  summarily on October 9, 1967 in La Higuera, Bolivia after he and his band of guerrillas were captured trying to overthrow the government there and install a Castro style regime. His is a legacy of blood and terror that should be lamented not celebrated.

Despite this record, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) decided on June 18, 2013 to add “The Life and Works of Che Guevara” to the World Registrar. UNESCO is providing funds to preserve Che Guevara’s papers.

There are consequences to having Guevara as an exemplar. The UN Human Rights Council's longest-serving official Jean Ziegler is a Che Guevara admirer. Ziegler was appointed to the UNHRC in 2000 at the request of the Castro regime. He also created and won the "Qaddafi Human Rights Prize."

This kind of moral bankruptcy extends beyond the symbolic to impacting the lives of millions.

UN experts continue to whitewash and cover up the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Venezuela.  On February 28, 2019 UN Watch's Hillel Neuer exposed the right to food expert's cover up of the famine in Venezuela.
In  the 1930s in Ukraine "journalist" Walter Duranty helped to cover up the deaths of millions in a famine manufactured by Josef Stalin's regime. Today so-called UN Human Rights experts are helping to cover up a famine in Venezuela.

Note to UNESCO and to the UN Human Rights Council:  Che Guevara is still dead. The sooner his ideas join him on the ash heap of history the better for humanity. Perhaps the United Nations should honor and celebrate the life and writings of Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas instead.

 This would be one step in the direction of the moral regeneration of this international organization.

This year was one of change and remembrance. U.S. - Cuba policy changed and 2017 marked in November the 100 year observance of the communist take over in Russia and a century of terror and mass murder caused by communists around the world. The United States pulled out of UNESCO. North Korea was in the headlines because of its nuclear threat. Notes from the Cuban Exile Quarter remembered some of the victims of communism in Cuba. Great news for US interests and taxpayers: United States pulling out of UNESCO

Kudos to the Trump Administration for pulling out of UNESCO

The United State is pulling out of the United Nation's cultural organization UNESCO for it's anti-Israel bias, the need to fundamentally reform the organization, and to save taxpayers over $500 million dollars in payments. However that is just the tip of the iceberg and the Trump Administration should be celebrated for taking this bold move both for American taxpayers and U.S. national interests.  Back in February 2017 I made the case in this blog for the United States leaving UNESCO and staying in the UN Human Rights Council.

Ronald Reagan defunded and left UNESCO in mid 1984 because the hard left was using it to spread its anti-American and radical left ideologies but George W. Bush brought the United States back into UNESCO after a twenty year boycott believing it had reformed. Returning to UNESCO was a mistake, the organization has been back to its old tricks that are hostile both to U.S. values and national security interests.

Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of the withdrawal by the United States of America from UNESCO made a video statement in which she stated that "together, we have worked to protect humanity’s shared cultural heritage in the face of terrorist attacks and to prevent violent extremism through education and media literacy." She claims later on in the same statement that "[at] the time when the fight against violent extremism calls for renewed investment in education, in dialogue among cultures to prevent hatred, it is deeply regrettable that the United States should withdraw from the United Nations agency leading these issues. At the time when conflicts continue to tear apart societies across the world, it is deeply regrettable for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations agency promoting education for peace and protecting culture under attack." 


This statement flies in the face of what UNESCO has done with the United States as a member. On June 18, 2013 the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added “The Life and Works of Che Guevara” to the World Registrar. UNESCO providing funds to preserve Che Guevara’s papers. Guevara in addition to promoting communist ideology, is best known as an advocate for guerrilla warfare who viewed terrorism as a legitimate method of struggle against an enemy.

How does adding all the works of Ernesto "Che" Guevara including the "originals manuscripts of his adolescence and youth to the campaign Diary in Bolivia”  serve to promote "education for peace"? How do the multimedia archives where recordings are contained of when he first lied about exporting revolution in 1961 and in later speeches declares the sacred duty to die for revolution in 1964 advance peace? Or gems such as this: "The situation was uncomfortable for the people and for [Eutimio], so I ended the problem giving him a shot with a .32 pistol in the right side of the brain, with exit orifice in the right temporal [lobe]. He gasped for a little while and was dead. Upon proceeding to remove his belongings I couldn't get off the watch tied by a chain to his belt, and then he told me in a steady voice farther away than fear: 'Yank it off, boy, what does it matter.' I did so and his possessions were now mine. Diary entry from the Sierra Maestra on the execution of Eutimio Guerra as an anti-revolutionary spy (January 1957)"

How does making his 1961 book, Guerrilla Warfare, easily available to youth around the world promote a culture of peace?  It is a manual for organizing and carrying out an armed insurgency that draws on Guevara's experience in the Cuban revolution. It pushes the idea of the guerilla as a vanguard that creates the conditions for revolution using violence. The cover of the English edition with a hand grenade says it all. Or his 1962 work Tactics and Strategy of the Latin American Revolution in which the Argentine guerilla explains "The seizure of power is a worldwide objective of the revolutionary forces," and later goes on to explain  "that we must follow the road of liberation even though it may cost millions of nuclear war victims." But there are many other works and documents. These are just a small selection.

Che Guevara's last work the "Message to the Tricontinental" written in 1967 contains some gems worth sharing, or so UNESCO believes to educate new generations for "peace" such as an appeal to embracing hatred in order to do the hard things without mercy:
"Hatred as an element of the struggle; a relentless hatred of the enemy, impelling us over and beyond the natural limitations that man is heir to and transforming him into an effective, violent, selective and cold killing machine. Our soldiers must be thus; a people without hatred cannot vanquish a brutal enemy."
Later on in the same essay Guevara makes the case for terrorism.
"We must carry the war into every corner the enemy happens to carry it: to his home, to his centers of entertainment; a total war. It is necessary to prevent him from having a moment of peace, a quiet moment outside his barracks or even inside; we must attack him wherever he may be; make him feel like a cornered beast wherever he may move. Then his moral fiber shall begin to decline. He will even become more beastly, but we shall notice how the signs of decadence begin to appear."
This is a passage that could, and perhaps has, inspired ISIS or Al Qaeda and we know that Che Guevara inspired the Norwegian terrorist mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik in 2011. Breivik cited both Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in his manifesto for the amount of carnage a small number can achieve.

U.S. tax dollars would have been paying for this, but the Obama Administration froze payments in 2011 after UNESCO recognized Palestine as a full member and began an onslaught of anti-Israel resolutions.

Who will UNESCO honor next to promote a culture of "peace": Osama Bin Laden, Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong, or Josef Stalin?

As the world threatens to spiral down into more extreme violence, perhaps other countries should consider some of the messages UNESCO and their tax dollars are paying for in promoting the writings of Mr. Guevara. Other countries should follow the lead of the United States and Israel in leaving this institution that fails not only to protect heritage sites but hastens their destruction, and remained silent when Hamas bulldozed a world heritage site to set up a terrorist training camp in 2013 and claims to promote peace while making readily available manuals on guerilla warfare and writings that advocate war crimes and terrorism.

Yes to the UN Human Rights Council and No to UNESCO

 The US should stay in the UN Human Rights Council but leave and defund UNESCO like President Reagan did in 1984.

 There is a discussion underway on whether or not the United States should remain in the UN Human Rights Council. Recognizing that the UN Human Rights Council was founded on a small moral compromise that sacrificed human rights oversight in Belarus and Cuba in what UN officials called the dawn of a new era; that the worse of the worst have been elected to this human rights body and these bad actors have gutted human rights standards, furthermore that the moral authority of the Council has been compromised and there is an international human rights crisis due to the politicization of human rights by the radical left. This culminated in the UN Human Rights Council paying homage to the memory of Fidel Castro after he died in what was an act of moral corruption. It is understandable why some would want to leave the Council but that would be a mistake.

This ongoing human rights crisis presents an opportunity for conservatives to save international human rights standards. Conservatives must reject the mistaken left wing narrative that claims that human rights emerged out of the French Revolution. The Revolution in France rejected traditions, established truths and declared war on the Church. The end result was terror, genocide and a military dictator (Napoleon Bonaparte) This would involve a public education campaign exploring the roots of modern human rights thought that stretches back to debates within the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, and during the European Age of Discovery in the debate over the rights of Native Americans by the Salamanca School following Colombus's arrival in America to British liberties beginning with Magna Carta, conservatives who led the international anti-slavery fight in Great Britain such as William Wilberforce and Edmund Burke's conservative defense of Indian civilization offered an important contribution that considered the role of providence.

Contrast this with the Obama Administration's pursuit of a radical agenda turning human rights upside down: declaring abortion a human right, was on more than one occasion not only on the wrong side of the human rights conversation but also taking (or refusing to take action) at the UN Human Rights Council. The Obama White House praised Raul Castro, refused to defend US sanctions on Cuba, although it is the law, but demonized Israel and and did not support them at the United Nations before resolutions presented by hostile countries. Obama's Cuba legacy is one of legitimizing tyranny, marginalizing dissidents and a dramatic escalation of human rights violations in Cuba. This trend has continued to manifest itself world wide throughout his Presidency with human rights deteriorating over the past eight years. To be fair this trend predated the Obama White House but only worsened during their tenure.

If it were up to me the United States would stay in the UN Human Rights Council but engage in aggressive diplomacy placing the anti-American dictatorships in the Council on the defensive in public debates and in the bureaucracy.

It is China, Cuba and Venezuela that do not belong on the UN Human Rights Council.The world's oldest continuous constitutional democracy, the United States needs to be on the Council to take the fight to human rights violators and expose their hypocrisy.

Nevertheless, the White House should immediately pull out of  UNESCO and defund it. The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is so out of touch with what it mission should be that on June 18, 2013 it added “The Life and Works of Che Guevara” to the World Registrar. UNESCO is providing funds to preserve Che Guevara’s papers. Guevara in addition to promoting communist ideology, is best known as an advocate for guerrilla warfare who viewed terrorism as a legitimate method of struggle against an enemy. U.S. tax dollars are paying for some of this and they shouldn't be.

Meanwhile leaving the UN Human Rights Council would leave the attacks against the United States in this body unanswered and new resolutions set possibly pernicious to the United States. The Reagan Administration took the offensive on human rights after the US had played defense and they were successful in placing outlaw regimes on the defensive.
